Cyber Street Smarts

Know Where You’re Going

Dead Reckoning was a practice used by sailors long before GPS or other navigation technologies existed. It was the idea that one could know their current location is based off a previously known location – a sort of semi-blind guess-timation. As a journey grew longer, the more inaccurate this method became. It’s pretty easy to see why it fell out of favor for more knowledgeable methods.

Navigating an online world can be much of the same kind of blind-guessing. We may know a few common sites we visit, but don’t know where else to go for new tools, ideas, products, or information. The back button becomes our best friend, and we don’t know if we should trust sites outside of our top 5.

CyberLight is a resource to push back against this. More people deserve to understand how to navigate in the online space, how information is collected and used, and what kind of opportunities are available to all. We want to lower the barrier to entry for smarter, safer browsing.

Just like a lighthouse serves as a beacon of hope to ships in dark seas, CyberLight hopes to illuminate online life and how to live it smarter, fuller, and safer.
